Changing Seasons Means Heading Out to the Farm

When your mother kindly hints that “I really miss seeing your column” in the paper, you know it’s time to write a little something. So that’s what this is – a (very) little something about fall.

Fall has always been my favorite time of year. There’s nothing quite like T-shirt-and-jeans weather. And it’s a perfect time for curling up on the porch with a blanket and good book. But it’s the farm experience that really makes fall worthwhile. Fresh apples, hot cider and farm market visits add oodles of joy when October rolls around.

I like knowing that I can wake up on Saturday morning, drive in any direction and find a farm market. I like knowing that I don’t have to settle for shipped-in, store-bought fruit. And I like knowing that even though I’m more than two hours away, I can feel at home in a 15-minute drive. I’m lucky to live in an area where farm markets are aplenty.

And I’m excited to know that the farm market season is just getting to when it’s really fun. Call me an addict, but it’s almost like I can’t get through fall without a pumpkin patch or corn maze fix. (Throw in a couple of football games and leaf piles, and it doesn’t get much better.)

So I’m excited to see more farm markets popping up here and there. And I’m excited to get out there and enjoy them. That’s why my job’s so great – while I sit here at my desk, writing about farm markets, I get to fantasize about my next weekend exploration to the nearest market.
