Growers Say No to Trade
Support and Cheap Imports

Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) passed through the House of Representatives by a narrow margin of 215-214 in December. The Senate, who also must approve TPA, has not scheduled a vote on TPA. Last month, the question of the month was: “Do you support granting President Bush Trade Promotion Authority?’

Arden Oreggia, of John Oreggia and Company, a Gonzales, Calif. vegetable farm, responded to last month’s query. Oreggia suggested that growers should not support the granting of TPA given to President Bush in December.

Mike Czysh, of Gibbsville Orchard in Cheboygan Falls, Wis. agreed with Oreggia. “I absolutely do not support trade promotion authority,” said Czysh, an apple grower and farm marketer. “We are already overwhelmed with imports, what we need is tariffs to protect us from cheap imports,” said Czysh.

TPA would grant broad negotiating power to the president, allowing Congress to approve agreements but not to amend them in any way.
