- How We React to Adversity Defines Us
- By John Thompson
Idaho Farm Bureau
- Its difficult to return to business as usual in the wake of the tragedy of Sept. 11. Terrorists struck a lethal blow that killed thousands of innocent people and changed America.
But terrible events often serve as a catalyst to unite us and the people of this country have a proven ability to rally around a cause. The first sign of that resiliency became evident shortly after the attack.
Our American flag, Old Glory, the most proud symbol of freedom anywhere could be seen everywhere. Rescue workers hoisted it above the wreckage of the World Trade Center and firemen draped it over the side of the still-smoldering Pentagon. Likewise, Americans went to their basements, attics and storage rooms, dusted Old Glory off and put her on display.
Here in eastern Idaho, the local department stores were sold out. One of the local newspapers printed a copy of the stars and stripes and people taped it to their windows. Its been great to see our flag along highways and downtown, on street corners and even in the window of a beat up old Dodge.
Terrorists shook the foundation of this country and we are mourning. But our flag, waving confidently in the breeze, is a testament of our freedom something we value, something we share, and something we will defend.
Our country is now preparing for what could be a long and difficult campaign to stamp out terrorism. Since this promises to be different than any previous war, it will be difficult to measure progress and we may never achieve unequivocal victory. Americans will be asked to make sacrifices, but we should remember that freedom is worth defending.
Previous generations of Americans have demonstrated great resiliency and an innate ability to overcome adversity. Now it is another generations turn.
