As a Virginia apple grower and current chairman of the U.S. Apple Association, I found your editorial in last month’s edition of The Fruit Grower News right on the mark.

The apple industry is at a crossroads and there is a greater need than ever before for us to work together to overcome the financial challenges confronting us. USApple provides the best means for all segments of the industry to put aside our regional and competitive differences to increase consumption and fight for apple growers on Capitol Hill.

As apple growers we are all in a financial pinch. Virginia’s growers have not been able to increase their own state assessment for over 13 years. Despite the fact that we currently pay 20% of our budget to USApple, our board has expressed support for increasing Virginia’s contribution. I believe we will find the means to remain a full dues paying member of USApple.

I appreciate The Fruit Grower News for its interest in our industry and continued support of USApple’s collective efforts on all our behalf.
